Care that leads with compassion.

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Medical Center (CCHMC) is one of the oldest and most distinguished children’s hospitals in the U.S. Serving nearly 1.5 million patients per year, this academic medical center is committed to prioritizing quality of life, where compassion and research are one and the same. As part of their journey to increase annual fundraising to $100M, Cincinnati Children’s turned to heavy to enhance their philanthropic brand and execute a robust campaign to amplify their work. By centering humanistic storytelling, while sharing the impact of the hospital’s innovative therapeutic treatments, we would inspire giving and long-term supporters and grow the medical center’s donor base during the holiday season.

The campaign we developed highlighted the two pillars of CCHMC, groundbreaking research and unparalleled compassionate care—told through the lens of Marley Johns and her family’s experience. In our anchor, we explore these twin pillars together as we speak to Marley, her family, and her medical team to learn about her journey and how the team at CCH devised a treatment plan that would allow Marley to live a whole and happy life.

As we moved into our vignettes and social cuts, we split these two themes apart, telling stories that focused on the head and the heart of the institution. Whether it’s the medical team’s warmth and confidence, the bonds and friendships Marley formed with her care team throughout her treatments, or the next-generation FLASH radiation therapy being developed at CCHMC, we see how the head and the heart are intertwined in everything Cincinnati Children’s does.

Ultimately, these films inspire all who watch them – in Cincinnati and beyond – to feel pride in the work being done at CCHMC and to motivate them to support the life-changing work happening at Cincinnati Children’s every day.

An New Approach to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with the University at Buffalo

Building a diverse student body is more nuanced than we often think. It’s not about meeting quotas, nor does it justify the admission of unqualified applicants. But to find what colleges are truly seeking, they have to make a conscious effort to build a healthy and diverse learning environment that works for everyone. And without students that develop communities that push for inquiry, challenge the status quo, generate respect, and expand perspectives—they’re going nowhere fast.

This is exactly why the University at Buffalo is providing financial support to minority students to help offset the cost of a college degree. Currently, 33% of Black students, 13% of Hispanic students, and 9% of Asian students borrow more than $40,000 in student loans to pay for school, leaving them with a significant amount of debt once they graduate—if they can afford to make it all the way across the stage. In actively working to invest in more equitable access to education, the university is helping to bridge the gap between white and minority access to education and ensure more equitable opportunities for all students. With the current 2023 class being the most diverse in UB’s history and 59% of graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences being minorities, UB is well on its way.

Tackling the Diversity in Stem Problem

The California State University (Cal State or CSU) is a public university system in California. With 23 campuses and eight off-campus centers enrolling 485,550 students with 55,909 faculty and staff, CSU is the largest four-year public university system in the United States. It is one of three public higher education systems in the state, with the other two being the University of California system and the California Community Colleges. The CSU system is incorporated as The Trustees of the California State University. The California State University system headquarters are in Long Beach, California.

The California State University system was created in 1960 under the California Master Plan for Higher Education, and it is a direct descendant of the California State Normal Schools chartered in 1857. With over 110,000 graduates annually, the CSU is the country’s greatest producer of bachelor’s degrees. The university system collectively sustains more than 209,000 jobs within the state.

In the 2015–16 academic year, CSU awarded 52 percent of newly issued California teaching credentials, 33 percent of the state’s information technology bachelor’s degrees, and it had more graduates in business (50 percent), criminal justice (50 percent), engineering (51 percent), criminal justice (53 percent), public administration (60 percent), and agriculture (75 percent) than all other universities and colleges in California combined. Altogether, about half of the bachelor’s degrees, one-fourth of the master’s degrees, and three percent of the doctoral degrees awarded annually in California are from the CSU. Additionally, 62 percent of all bachelor’s degrees granted to Hispanic students in California and over half of bachelor’s degrees earned by California’s Latino, African American and Native American students combined are conferred by the CSU.

Partnering with them this year focused specifically on their STEM partnership and promotion, we pushed out a series of films to help California and the world know the impact they were having.
