Background

When Melissa Tumblin created the “Microtia and Atresia Support” Facebook group, she knew there were likely others out in the world affected by Microtia and Atresia, birth defects that commonly result in missing or underdeveloped ears or ear canals, and potential hearing loss. What she didn’t know, is that the group would grow so rapidly.   After expanding to over 1,000 members from across the globe all in under a year, it was clear that she wasn’t the only one searching for answers. In response to the overwhelming need, Ear Community was born and immediately hit the ground running. The organization and its members serve as a resource hub, comprehensive support network, and advocate for individuals and families affected by Microtia and Atresia.

The Challenge

With work so integral to a child’s wellbeing, Ear Community’s focus shifts rapidly from day to day. Between building a network of care providers, drafting and petitioning legislation, meetings with FDA officials, and growing their community, there’s little time for long-term planning. Rather than having to come up with marketing strategies at the moment, Ear Community needed a solution that would provide them with a pliable toolkit that left room for their most important work to continue to take center stage.

The approach

Intent on providing hope and peace of mind, Ear Community has worked tirelessly to build a space that is welcoming and inclusive, and their identity had to be one and the same. Our goal was to develop a brand that embodied Ear Community’s earnestness while embracing the organization’s lively and playful spirit. Inspired by themes of togetherness, our team put together a multi-faceted rebrand that incorporated lighthearted imagery and a colorful, uplifting palette. The feel of Ear Community’s new identity exemplifies all that they are, a community that makes space, and is free of judgment or stigma.

The rationale

Differences don’t define who you are. How you feel. And they certainly don’t define what you are not. Let’s remind each other to be empowered by what’s possible. Not because of Microtia and Atresia, in spite of. Not hearing impaired—happy. When we come together, get involved, find support, inspire—we aren’t just improving our own lives, we are improving each other. Let’s help each other realize our needs. Because everyone should be able to hear.
